Oil Change

Why Do You Need Regular Oil Changes? “It can wait until next week”, and somehow, next week never comes. This can lead to costly repairs which could have been prevented with regular maintenance. So let’s cover the basics – when to change your oil.

Every car if different, however a good rule of thumb is for regular oil, change it every 3 months and for synthetic oil, change it every 6 months. When in doubt, check your car owner’s manual, which will tell you how often your car’s oil should be changed, along with other routine maintenance that should be performed.

What to Look for When Checking your Oil

It’s important to check your oil every so often to ensure that your car is running smoothly. With the engine off, remove the dipstick and wipe off any oil on the end and re-insert the dipstick and pull out. You are looking for a few things:

  • That the oil level reaches what it should (this should be indicated directly on the dipstick – check your owner’s manual if unsure)
  • That the oil is light brown and translucent (once the oil has turned black, it’s definitely time for an oil change)
  • That the oil’s consistency is smooth – if it feels gritty or coarse, it’s time for a change.

*If your oil seems off (colour, consistency, etc.) or you are burning through oil faster than normal, contact VIP AutoPro to get your car in for a diagnostic, as this may indicate a larger problem and left untreated, can cause damage to your car.*

Finally, why should you get regular oil changes? Simple! Routine maintenance is cheaper and ultimately more convenient than costly repairs. Regular oil changes are like going to the dentist – you don’t want to do it, but not going can mean a whole lot of cavities.
